Bring Back the Open Floor Salon: Why Collaboration Will Always Beat Competition
Share
There was something special about the old-school salon.
Before private suites became the norm, salons were filled with conversation, creativity, laughter, and constant learning. Every stylist, whether they had been licensed for six months or twenty years, had the opportunity to watch, ask questions, share techniques, and grow together. Knowledge wasn't hidden—it was passed down.
Some of the greatest lessons I learned in this industry didn't come from a classroom. They came from standing beside another stylist and watching how they approached a consultation, perfected a haircut, mixed color, or handled a difficult client with grace.
Somewhere along the way, our industry became quieter.
Stylists began working behind closed doors, protecting techniques instead of sharing them. While salon suites have created incredible opportunities for independence, they've also unintentionally removed one of the most valuable parts of our profession: community.
Iron Sharpens Iron
One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 27:17:
"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
That scripture perfectly describes what a healthy salon environment should feel like.
When one stylist masters a new technique, everyone should benefit.
When someone discovers a better consultation process, everyone should grow.
When someone makes a mistake, everyone should learn from it.
Growth multiplies when knowledge is shared instead of guarded.
We Rise Faster Together
I've never believed there is only room for one successful stylist.
There are enough clients.
There are enough opportunities.
There is enough success for all of us.
The strongest salons aren't built on competition inside the building—they're built on collaboration.
Imagine walking into a salon where stylists genuinely celebrate each other's wins, offer help without being asked, and mentor newer professionals because they remember what it felt like to be the beginner.
That kind of culture doesn't just create better stylists.
It creates unforgettable client experiences.
Clients can feel positive energy the moment they walk through the door.
Learning Should Never Stop
After more than two decades in the beauty industry, I'm still learning.
Every class I attend...
Every educator I meet...
Every stylist I watch...
There's always something new to add to my toolbox.
The moment we believe we've learned everything is the moment we stop growing.
True professionals stay teachable.
The Culture I'm Building
At BU Salon & HairLounge, my vision extends far beyond beautiful hair.
I want to build a salon where education is part of the everyday culture.
A place where experienced stylists mentor the next generation.
Where questions are welcomed.
Where ideas are exchanged.
Where success is celebrated together.
Where everyone leaves stronger than they arrived.
I want our salon to become a place where "iron sharpens iron" isn't just a scripture on the wall—it's the way we operate every single day.
Because when we invest in one another, our clients receive the very best version of each stylist.
And that's how great salons become legendary.
Let's bring back the open-floor salon mentality—not because we have to work the way we used to, but because the spirit of learning, teaching, and sharpening one another should never go out of style.
