The Old Me Had to Die: How Changing My Thinking Changed My Life and Career
Share
There came a point in my life and career where I had to be honest with myself.
I was talented.
I was working.
I was booked.
I had vision.
But I was tired.
Not physically tired — soul tired.
I realized that no matter how much I did, how hard I worked, or how much I prayed for “more,” I kept running into the same ceiling. And the truth was uncomfortable:
It wasn’t my circumstances holding me back.
It was my thinking.
The Version of Me That Got Me Here
For a long time, I operated in survival mode.
I said yes to everything.
I overworked.
I undercharged.
I tried to prove myself.
I carried everything on my own.
I called it ambition.
But it was fear.
Fear that if I slowed down, everything would fall apart.
Fear that if I raised my standards, people would leave.
Fear that if I stopped doing everything, I’d lose control.
That version of me built something — and I’m grateful for her.
But she wasn’t built for where I’m going.
When You Realize the Old You Can’t Go With You
Growth started feeling uncomfortable.
I outgrew conversations.
I outgrew habits.
I outgrew certain environments.
I even outgrew parts of myself.
And I had to grieve that.
Because when your mindset shifts, it feels like you’re losing something. But what you’re actually losing is limitation.
The old me believed:
-
More work equals more success.
-
If I don’t do it, it won’t get done right.
-
Rest means I’m falling behind.
-
I’ll feel secure once I make more money.
The new me understands:
-
Structure creates freedom.
-
Systems create stability.
-
Boundaries create peace.
-
Discipline creates wealth.
-
Identity creates results.
That shift changed everything.
Changing the Trajectory of My Thinking
I stopped asking, “How can I work more?”
And started asking, “How can I build smarter?”
I stopped chasing every opportunity.
I started building aligned opportunities.
I stopped moving emotionally.
I started moving strategically.
I stopped trying to survive month to month.
I started structuring for sustainability.
That’s when my trajectory changed.
Not because money instantly poured in.
Not because everything became easy.
But because I became different.
The Identity Shift
The hardest part wasn’t learning new strategies.
It was becoming the person who could execute them.
I had to let the insecure version of me die.
The reactive version.
The over-explaining version.
The overextending version.
The “I’ll just handle it” version.
Success required a new identity.
Calm.
Clear.
Intentional.
Structured.
Disciplined.
I had to become the CEO in my own mind before my life and business could reflect it.
The New Space
This new space I’m in feels different.
It’s quieter.
It’s more intentional.
It’s less chaotic.
It’s less emotional.
It’s more strategic.
I don’t feel the need to prove myself.
I don’t feel the need to explain every decision.
I don’t feel guilty for protecting my time.
And I don’t feel afraid of elevation anymore.
This space was necessary.
Because the life and career I desire cannot be built from the mindset that was only designed to survive.
If You’re Here Too…
If you feel disconnected from who you used to be…
If your standards are rising…
If your tolerance is lower…
If you crave structure more than applause…
If you’re becoming more disciplined and less reactive…
You’re not losing yourself.
You’re evolving.
The old you had to die.
And that’s not a loss.
It’s a promotion.
The version of you required for your next level isn’t louder.
She’s wiser.
She’s calmer.
She’s strategic.
She’s rooted.
And once your thinking changes, your trajectory has no choice but to follow.
Peace & Love
