When What Once Protected You Becomes What’s Holding You Back

There’s a certain kind of realization that doesn’t come loudly.
It doesn’t crash in like chaos or announce itself with certainty.
It comes quietly… almost like a whisper you can’t ignore anymore.
Lately, I’ve been sitting with the truth that some of the very things I’ve held onto—mindsets, habits, even parts of my personality—were once necessary. At one point in my life, they protected me. They kept me safe. They helped me survive.
But what I’m realizing now… is that what kept me safe then is keeping me stuck now.
And that’s a hard truth to sit with.
Because how do you let go of something that once saved you?
For a long time, I told myself things like:
“I can’t do that right now.”
“I don’t have the money.”
“My credit isn’t where it needs to be.”
“I don’t have the credentials.”
And while those things may have been facts at one point… they also became limits. Quiet, comfortable limits that I stopped questioning.
But the truth is—just because something feels safe doesn’t mean it’s where you’re meant to stay.
There comes a point in your growth where safety can start to look like stagnation.
And that’s where faith steps in.
Walking with God has been teaching me something deeper than just belief—it’s been teaching me movement. Even when it doesn’t make sense. Even when it feels uncomfortable. Even when it looks, from the outside, a little… delusional.
Because let’s be honest—trusting God will have you moving in ways that don’t always add up on paper.
Taking steps without having every detail figured out.
Believing in opportunities you can’t fully see yet.
Letting go of logic just enough to make room for faith.
And I’m learning… that’s exactly what it’s supposed to feel like.
There’s a scripture that says we walk by faith, not by sight—and I’m starting to understand that in real time.
Faith isn’t always pretty.
It isn’t always logical.
And it definitely isn’t always comfortable.
But it’s necessary.
I used to hear people say, “Only God can judge me,” and I thought I understood it. But now, I’m learning the depth of that statement.
It’s not about dismissing accountability.
It’s about freedom.
Freedom from living your life based on other people’s expectations.
Freedom from shrinking yourself to fit what feels realistic to others.
Freedom from needing validation before you move.
Because when you really understand that God is the one guiding your path… you stop asking permission from people who were never meant to understand your journey in the first place.
And that changes everything.
So now, I’m in this space of releasing.
Releasing the old versions of myself that were built out of survival.
Releasing the fear disguised as “being practical.”
Releasing the need to have everything make sense before I move.
Because what God has for me… isn’t limited by what I think I qualify for.
And what He has for you isn’t either.
You don’t always need more money to start.
You don’t always need perfect credit.
You don’t always need another certification.
Sometimes, you just need obedience.
Sometimes, you just need to move.
Sometimes, you just need to trust.
Even when it feels unfamiliar.
Even when it feels uncomfortable.
Even when it feels a little delusional.
Because maybe… just maybe…
That’s what growth feels like.
